First gracing our screens in 1994 in North, Scarlett Johansson quickly became a recognizable name in The Horse Whisperer, and then the iconic Ghost World (2001), Girl with the Pearl Earring (2003), and Lost In Translation (2003). Where she earned her first Golden Globe, BAFTA nominations and BAFTA win in 2004 for Girl with the Pearl Earring, oh and I did forget a double nomination in the same category. From a young age, she knew she wanted to act, and never gave up. Fast forward to 2020 where she got her first and double nomination for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. 2 drastically different films, with 2 performances that captured audiences’ hearts and minds.
Why Scarlett Johansson Was the Perfect Choice for the Jurassic Franchise

But let’s fast forward to 2024 where Scarlett Johansson lands a lead role in Jurassic World Rebirth, the 7th installment in the Jurassic franchise. Before landing the role she met with Steven Spielberg who directed the original and its 1997 sequel. They spent hours catching up, and she didn’t
even mention how she slept in a Jurassic Park tent for over a year (we’ll get to that later). But, what’s different about this one, compared to the last 3? Well for one it has Scarlett Johansson, who is a lifelong fan of Jurassic Park, and who isn’t. Oh, and there is a horror aspect, and not just a little scary, but mutant-type dinosaurs.
Her character is Zora Bennet, a former mercenary who is leading a group of scientists and her team on a mission to retrieve dinosaur blood/DNA for potential cures to illnesses. She takes it to a new level, in an interview with multiple interviews (most recently Jimmy Fallon 2024) she reiterated her childhood story, of Jurassic Park being the first film she remembers vividly seeing. One memory for her that stands out, is one Christmas she wanted a Jurassic Park tent, which she erected in her small bedroom she shared with her older sister and practically lived in it for a year.

She loved the film, and sequel films so much she was begging anyone (her agents) and anyone who would hear of her intense desire to get into the franchise. Jokingly saying she would do craft service, or even die in the first minutes of the film just to say she was in it. I wouldn’t doubt, that she has a major collection of some sort, and even having the tent still; or even making her children fans.
Jurassic is just one of those franchises that never ceases to amaze me, and will always be that franchise that makes billions at the box office. Speaking of billions, Scarlett Johansson is THE highest-paid star today and her films have raked in over $14 billion putting her in the top 3 grossing actors of all time. On top of that, she also dominates the independent film world. I have no doubt Scarlett Johansson will rake in all the money for this one, and bring the crowds to the theaters. Marvel will rue the day they didn’t give her a trilogy and her own franchise. One thing that makes me excited about this film is her pure excitement to step into this franchise. Working with a world-class director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla and Rouge One), a rising Jonathan Bailey (another lifelong fan), and the always iconic Mahershala Ali will add to the draw for the film.

Even seeing small glimpses of the 3, I can already see the chemistry, and I am excited to see them. Oh, and the long grass is making its appearance, according to a source who worked on the film. Says just how committed to the film they are, by planting a whole field. This pays homage to the original trilogy and gives major Christopher Nolan vibes. Another reason to be excited is they are adapting a sequence from Michale Crichton’s Jurassic Park novel, where the team drifts through a lagoon in a raft without waking the T-rex.
Every footage/photo I have seen gets me even more hyped and 2 words PRACTICAL EFFECTS, with the exception of dinosaurs of course. Filmed in multiple locations such as Malta, and Thailand. With the film’s original writer and filmmakers attached to this, it regains my excitement. What’s even more important is having a lead who loves the franchise and the filmmakers. I may not have loved the last 3 (or even seen the latest one). But I am still a huge fan, it’s something about dinosaurs that captures me.; and it should capture you too.
