In a move that instantly electrifies the horror landscape, Scarlett Johansson is officially set to star in a brand new Exorcist movie from Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek, and Universal. The casting marks a major shift for the iconic franchise and signals a creative overhaul under writer and director Mike Flanagan, the filmmaker behind Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mass, and The Haunting of Hill House. Johansson’s casting arrives at a pivotal moment for the franchise. The 2023 entry The Exorcist: Believer suffered at the box office and left Universal searching for a bold direction after investing heavily in rebooting the property. Bringing Johansson aboard is a clear statement that the studio intends to elevate the franchise with prestige talent and a new creative voice. Her involvement follows her recent blockbuster success in Jurassic World: Rebirth, which pulled in close to $869 million worldwide and helped revive another beloved film series. After meeting with producers and Flanagan, Johansson quickly signed on to become the face of a reimagined Exorcist universe.
Rather than continuing the storyline from The Exorcist: Believer, the upcoming film will chart an entirely new course within the franchise’s mythology. This fresh take is produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Red Room Pictures, with Flanagan also writing and directing. Alexandra Magistro will executive produce for Red Room Pictures, while David Robinson oversees production for Morgan Creek. Jason Blum and Ryan Turek are also on board, making this a powerhouse collaboration across the genre’s most influential studios.
The project marks Johansson’s first true horror film, adding a fascinating new dimension to her already wide-ranging career. She recently made her directorial debut with the Sony Pictures Classics drama Eleanor the Great, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She will soon appear in James Gray’s Paper Tiger alongside Miles Teller and Adam Driver. With a résumé that includes a Tony Award for A View from the Bridge, a BAFTA win for Lost in Translation, and dual Oscar nominations for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, Johansson enters The Exorcist universe with both elite prestige and blockbuster power.
