The Jurassic franchise is preparing to roar once again. Jurassic World 5 is reportedly in active development at Universal Pictures, with Jurassic World Rebirth filmmaker Gareth Edwards in early talks to return as director. Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali are all expected to reprise their roles in the next chapter of the long-running blockbuster saga.

Despite mixed critical reception, Jurassic World Rebirth was an undeniable global success, grossing massive numbers at the box office ($868 million worldwide) and proving that the prehistoric franchise remains one of Hollywood’s most dependable brands. In an era where superhero and sci-fi franchises like Marvel, DC, and Star Wars face turbulent footing, Jurassic continues to dominate by pure audience draw and cinematic spectacle.
However, Rebirth wasn’t without its faults. Many fans and critics pointed to the film’s uneven script as its weakest element, particularly given the powerhouse cast it assembled. With two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, multiple award nominee Scarlett Johansson, and Wicked breakout Jonathan Bailey leading the ensemble, the screenplay felt like a missed opportunity.
Still, there’s plenty of excitement for what’s next. Edwards has repeatedly proven his ability to craft visually stunning and thematically rich worlds, from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to The Creator. The hope is that Universal will pair his visual eye with a stronger screenplay this time around to match the franchise’s scale.

One undeniable factor in Rebirth’s success was Scarlett Johansson herself. With her commanding presence and effortless charisma, Johansson reasserted her status as one of the most bankable stars in the world. Fans also noticed her undeniable chemistry with Bailey, both on-screen and during the film’s global press tour. Many are already rooting for a romantic subplot between Johansson’s Zoe Bennett and “Sexiest Man Alive” Bailey’s Dr. Henry Loomis in the sequel.
Production is reportedly being eyed for 2026, with Edwards known for keeping his shoots efficient. Rebirth wrapped in just four months—a rarity for tentpole filmmaking. Johansson, meanwhile, continues her busy slate, as she’s also set to star as Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action Tangled remake.
The next Jurassic World entry is shaping up to be another thrilling ride, and if Edwards and Johansson are both back, fans can expect something truly ferocious.
