‘Doomsday’ Two minutes of multiversal chaos, Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and a hammer swing that will break the internet.

Marvel just ended the wait. After a year of teasers dribbled out in front of Avatar: Fire and Ash, a five-hour livestream of chairs, and one very lucky room of exhibitors at CinemaCon back in April, Marvel Studios has finally dropped the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, and it is exactly the swing-for-the-fences pileup fans have been begging for.

Two minutes. Roughly four decades of superhero movie history. One extremely angry man in a metal mask.

Doomsday: Steve Rogers, Mjolnir, and a Latverian Accent

That man, of course, is Robert Downey Jr., returning to the MCU not as Tony Stark but as Victor Von Doom, narrating the trailer in a fictionalized Eastern European lilt that lands somewhere between menacing Eastern European assassin and a bedtime story. If you were worried Downey would coast on charm, don’t be. There is a moment where Doom catches Stormbreaker mid-swing with one hand, and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor looks like a man doing math he does not like.

But the shot everyone is going to be talking about belongs to Chris Evans. Steve Rogers is back, and he is holding Mjolnir.

Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi throws down with Channing Tatum’s Gambit. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki slinks back into frame with that familiar smirk. There are glimpses of Black Panther’s Wakanda, Tenoch Huerta Mejía’s Namor, the Thunderbolts crew, Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby’s Fantastic Four, and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X staring down an Incursion. It all funnels into an ensemble battle that makes the Battle of Earth look like a scrimmage.

Anthony and Joe Russo are back behind the camera, reuniting with Infinity War and Endgame scribe Stephen McFeely, alongside co-writer Michael Waldron. The film clocks in at a hefty 165 minutes and closes out the Multiverse Saga’s penultimate chapter before Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18, with tickets already on sale for Disney’s premium Infinity Vision screens. If the CinemaCon reaction was any indication, you may want to buy now. Fair warning though: outside a slick new Loki beat, this is essentially the same cut exhibitors saw in April. Marvel is holding something back, and that is somehow the most exciting part.
