Between the Intercontinental and United States Championships on the main roster and the Heritage Cup and Women’s North American Championships on NXT, there’s only been one division under WWE without a midcard belt: the women of the main roster. Whether due to the plethora of injuries sidelining top stars or ill-advised booking decisions, the women’s title picture has been decidedly lackluster, but this past Friday on Smackdown, Nick Aldis revealed a gold-plated step in the right direction: the WWE Women’s United States Championship.

A carbon copy of the men’s title (albeit in the customary women’s white leather), the introduction of the women’s US championship finally brings the women of the main roster up to speed with the rest of the company, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. While the Women’s Championship title defense has been far and few between (Liv’s storyline held hostage by the New Judgment Day) the women of WWE’s mid-card (particularly on Smackdown) have been quietly and consistently delivering some of the most reliable, entertaining TV on a week-to-week basis.
Whether it’s Michin taking mind-boggling bumps, Piper Niven accidentally landing a top rope spot on Chelsea Green, or Candice LeRae popping up as an unlikely but not unwelcome tag partner for Nia Jax, the women’s mid-carders deliver whether they’re given 3 minutes for a match, or 15. Admittedly, the midcard scene isn’t quite as strong on Raw, which has been spinning its wheels trying to put Pure Fusion Collective over the past few months. But with talent like Zelina Vega and Kiana James floating around relatively storyline-less, there are still more than enough names between the red and blue brands to fill out a respectable pool of contenders for an inaugural Women’s United States Champion.

Then, of course, there’s the all-important question of who should be crowned inaugural US champ, and how she should be decided. If the title will be defended on both brands (a la the Women’s Tag Belts) someone from Raw may walk away with the gold, but given the work the women of Smackdown have put in over the past few months, it only seems fair that someone from the blue brand would debut the title.
But whether it’s decided by battle royale, six-pack challenge, ladder match, gauntlet eliminator, or good old-fashioned tournament, both Chelsea Green and Michin are two rock solid, when it comes to a first-ever Women’s United States Champion. Though their feud may have ended via dumpster a few weeks ago, Green and Michin laid the groundwork for a women’s mid-card belt on Smackdown – it’s only right one of them walks away with it.
