Universal is officially turning the lights back on for The Exorcist. The studio confirmed Friday that its long-gestating, hotly anticipated reimagining of the horror landmark will now arrive in theaters on March 12, 2027. The film is written, directed, and produced by Mike Flanagan and stars Scarlett Johansson, marking one of the most intriguing genre pairings in recent memory.
The Exorcist: Martyrs (working title) had previously been dated for March 13, 2026, before being quietly removed from the release calendar last June, sparking questions about its status. Now, with a prime spring break slot secured, The Exorcist is back on schedule and positioned as a major event title for Universal Pictures. The only other film currently slated for that weekend is Sony’s animated Buds, leaving Flanagan’s horror opus with plenty of room to dominate the conversation.
What’s the new The Exorcist 2027 release date?
The new The Exorcist film is now set to arrive in theaters on March 12, 2027. It will be written and directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Scarlett Johansson and Jacobi Jupe, by Universal Pictures.

Flanagan’s involvement alone signaled a tonal shift for the franchise. After redefining prestige horror on television with The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher, and delivering a thoughtful sequel in Doctor Sleep, the filmmaker has built a reputation for marrying emotional depth with unsettling dread. Blumhouse confirmed back in May 2024 that Flanagan was going all in on The Exorcist, stepping away from other projects to focus on what the studio described as a radical redo of the classic property.
Johansson’s casting only heightened the intrigue. Known for blockbusters and award-nominated dramatic turns alike, she brings unexpected weight to a franchise long associated with raw, intimate performances. She is joined by Hamnet breakout Jacobi Jupe, signaling a character-driven approach rather than a nostalgia-fueled retread.
A Clean Break From Recent Franchise Attempts
Crucially, Flanagan’s The Exorcist will tell an entirely new story. It is not connected to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which earned $65.5 million domestically and $136.2 million worldwide after NBCUniversal, Peacock, and Blumhouse acquired franchise rights from Morgan Creek Entertainment in 2021. That clean slate gives Flanagan freedom to explore faith, fear, and possession without being tethered to existing continuity.

The film is produced by Blumhouse, Atomic Monster, and Morgan Creek Entertainment, in association with Red Room Pictures. Producers include Jason Blum, David Robinson, and Flanagan himself, with Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers. For Universal and Blumhouse, the 2027 date suggests confidence not just in the film’s readiness but in its potential to reset one of horror’s most daunting legacies.
If Flanagan’s past work and Scarlett Johansson’s star power are any indication, The Exorcist is shaping up to be less about shock value and more about the slow, creeping terror that lingers long after the credits roll.
