‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Season 6 Review: A Final Goodbye from Our Favorite Staten Island Vampires

Farewell Fangs: A Hilarious and Heartfelt Final Bite from Staten Island’s Favorite Vampires.

What We Do in the Shadows
FX / Hulu

Everything good must come to an end, or so the saying goes. This sentiment rings true for one of the most uproarious series to grace our TV screens, FX Networks’ What We Do in the Shadows, inspired by the film of the same name from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. As the show embarks on its sixth and final season, the first few episodes maintain the high standards set by earlier seasons, promising a fitting farewell.

Season 6 picks up seamlessly from where we left off. After undergoing a transformation into a vampire through questionable scientific experiments alongside Laszlo (Matt Berry) and betraying Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) returns to his human self, taking a well-deserved break from life with the vampires. All our beloved characters venture out independently, exploring new pursuits that fulfill them (aside from their usual taste for human blood). Guillermo seeks new employment, while Nandor and Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) begin to spend more time among humans. Meanwhile, Laszlo and Colin (Mark Proksch) embark on a rather unique project that suits two vampires with a penchant for science.

In the season premiere, titled “The Return of Jerry,” written by Paul Simms and directed by Kyle Newacheck, the creators deftly illustrate the shifting dynamics between the vampires and Guillermo. This episode not only introduces an intriguing new character but also sets the stage for the vampires as they navigate their own mid-life-like crises, striving to rediscover their ambitions and enhance their undead lives.

As the first few episodes unfold, they highlight the characters’ individual ventures. The cast of What We Do in the Shadows has consistently delivered remarkable performances over the years, as their characters delivered many memorable one-liners. The final season promises to showcase their characters’ new self-reflections, maintaining the same level of commitment. For 6 years, despite a consistent ensemble, the chemistry between Laszlo and Nadja, the bond between Nandor and Guillermo, Colin’s lengthy anecdotes, and The Guide’s unwavering loyalty never gets old.

The first three episodes foreshadow an exciting and satisfying conclusion. While we prepare to say goodbye to the hilariously eccentric, fanged residents of Staten Island, the dedication of the entire cast and crew is evident. From the beginning through now, they have consistently set the bar high, delivering outrageous and side-splitting episodes year after year, along with dynamic character interactions.

With the final season introducing closing storylines while still adding freshness through the introduction of new characters, the creators have yet to miss a beat. Regardless of what unfolds next, one thing is clear: What We Do in the Shadows remains a show worth revisiting, as it’s just as funny and engaging on subsequent viewings as it is the first time around, becoming a classic in their genre.

Grade: A

What We Do in the Shadows Season 6 premieres with its first three episodes on October 21 on FX, with streaming available the next day on Hulu.
