The Bad Batch animated series introduces some brand new characters to the Star Wars universe. While the Batch themselves appeared in The Clone Wars season 7, They were best fleshed out during the first two seasons of The Bad Batch. However, another character introduced in episode 1 of season 1, is quickly becoming one of the best Star Wars characters ever.
Please note that the following will contain minor spoilers for The Bad Batch season 3 premiere episodes.
The Bad Batch Season 3 Premiere Episodes Showcase A Different Omega
When season 3 of The Bad Batch premieres, Omega is in semi-captivity on Mount Tantis, the Empire’s secret science division headquarters. She is also there with Crosshair, who is a prisoner after turning on the Empire last season. The season 2 finale saw Omega brought to this location to Lama Su. Omega’s safety is an incentive for Su to help the Empire in their cloning projects. While Omega’s job is to assist in the day-to-day of the facility. Mostly busy work to keep her occupied and visible.
Season 3 Episode 1 sees a newly captive Omega, who is going through the motions of assisting the Empire in their work while attempting to get enough information to hatch an escape plan. The episode takes audiences through Omega’s new daily routine. Which includes caring for an animal, and daily discussions with Crosshair. Much to his dismay. The earlier parts of the episode see the same exuberant and bouncy Omega that we are used to. However, a time jump, evident by Omega’s longer hairstyle, makes it apparent that she’s been there a while now. But she’s still the fiery and full-of-life Omega we know, still planning on escaping with Crosshair.
The Bad Batch Season 3 Omega Fights In Face Of Adversity
What’s unique about Omega (Michelle Ang) is just how full of life she is. When the time jump happens, there’s a feeling that Omega may have been beaten down by the system. The monotony of her work and the strict regiment of the Empire may have turned her cold and distant. But the truth was far from it. Omega was still hopeful and caring and considerate. Her conversations with Crosshair happen against his will, and her loyalty to who she still considers her brother, is inspiring.
The Bad Batch does get very dark at times, like how it deals with Emperor Palpatine’s plans that we don’t see fleshed out until The Rise Of Skywalker. But despite the darkness, Omega seemingly remains bright and full of optimism. Any other character may have wilted in the face of the Empire’s rigorous instruction and rules. But not Omega.
How Omega Is An Amalgamation of Other Star Wars Heroes
The Bad Batch Season 3 Omega seemingly has shades of other Star Wars characters. While she’s always been the bubbly and naive member of the squad, the season 3 premiere puts her all on her own. so we finally get to see Omega, outside of the influences or comparisons to the rest of her brothers. And she’s still consistent. Despite her age, and some naivete regarding how the universe works, she is still persistent and has a high sense of justice and righteousness.
This is clear as day when she is doing her daily talks with Crosshair. Despite Crosshair constantly reprimanding her to leave him behind, even saying he would do the same to her, she still isn’t affected by it. Her moral compass is so strong, that even Crosshair being mean to her doesn’t deter her from trying to help him. It’s a wonderful depiction of a young character who remains so hopeful in the face of blatant cruelty.
In many ways, Omega has the idealism of a young Luke Skywalker. The resourcefulness of desert scavenger Rey. The assertiveness and cunning as Han Solo. And the sense of duty and tact like Leia Organa. It’s these qualities that make her a treat to watch and make audiences root for her. It’s also what makes her stand out as one of the more brilliant Star Wars characters.
The Bad Batch Season 3 is on Disney+ now.
