Video game adaptations are having a very fast and furious moment, and Universal is gunning for pole position. Hot off the heels of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s, the studio has revved up development on a high-octane adaptation of Sega’s classic arcade racer OutRun. This time, they’re tapping explosive blockbuster king Michael Bay to direct, with Sydney Sweeney—one of Hollywood’s most in-demand multi-hyphenates—set to produce (and possibly star).
Sydney Sweeney Shifts Gears: From On-Screen Star to Powerhouse Producer in OutRun movie

Sweeney, fresh off producing and starring in Immaculate, continues to expand her influence behind the camera. While she’s not yet slated to star in OutRun, her involvement signals a growing commitment to shepherding genre projects with international appeal. Also steering the project is Bay’s longtime producing partner Brad Fuller via their Platinum Dunes banner, which holds a first-look deal with Universal. OutRun will be penned by Jayson Rothwell (Polar, Silent Night), with Sega’s Toru Nakahara producing and Sega COO Shuji Utsumi overseeing the project.
The original OutRun debuted in 1986 and helped define the driving game genre, featuring a red Ferrari Testarossa, pulse-pounding synth music, and a sun-drenched coastal backdrop that became a signature of ’80s arcade culture. Its unique aesthetic even gave rise to the electronic “OutRun” music genre. Though plot details for the film are still under wraps, fans can expect the adaptation to lean heavily into the franchise’s stylized speed, sleek visuals, and retro flair.

Universal has already struck gold with recent gaming properties, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned a jaw-dropping $1.4 billion globally, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, which scared up $290 million. OutRun could be next in line to take pole position in this new era of high-performing video game-to-film adaptations.
As for Sweeney, the actress-producer is showing no signs of slowing down. In addition to Immaculate, she’s producing and starring in a Christy Martin boxing biopic, further cementing her status as a creative force in front of and behind the camera. With Bay’s action pedigree and Sweeney’s rising influence, OutRun might just be the next turbo-charged hit in the Hollywood video game canon.
