Though Waller-Bridge won’t be stepping into Lara’s combat boots herself, her presence in the series’ development is enough to promise a fresh and contemporary take on the character. Amazon has yet to confirm casting, but it’s hard to imagine two stronger candidates than Turner and Boynton, each of whom brings a unique mix of grace, grit, and intensity that the role demands.

With Waller-Bridge spearheading the project, the upcoming Tomb Raider series could mark a bold new era for Lara, whose journey in pop culture has seen everything from video game origins to Angelina Jolie’s blockbuster portrayals in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its 2003 sequel. Alicia Vikander also brought Croft’s high-octane story to life in 2018’s Tomb Raider, showcasing a grittier side to the globetrotting heroine.

But Tomb Raider isn’t the only adaptation Waller-Bridge is juggling. As part of her creative partnership with Amazon, she’s also tackling Claudia Lux’s Sign Here, giving fans of the darkly comedic novel something to look forward to. Both series add to Waller-Bridge’s high-caliber adaptations that promise complex characters and rich storytelling.

With Turner, Boynton, and Waller-Bridge on the verge of breathing new life into Lara Croft, Tomb Raider fans have plenty to be excited about as the beloved archaeologist embarks on her next chapter.

The character has also been voiced in a Netflix anime series by Hayley Atwell.
