Sorry, Marvel fans—Scarlett Johansson is putting an end to the speculation once and for all.
The Black Widow star made it clear in a recent interview with InStyle that Natasha Romanoff’s story is well and truly over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite persistent fan theories and hopes that she might reprise her role in future projects like Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, Johansson is shutting the door on any possible return.
Scarlett Johansson says Black Widow really is dead

“Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay?” Johansson emphatically stated, addressing the fandom’s refusal to let go. “They just don’t want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let her go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment.”
For many fans, Natasha’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame remains one of the most emotional moments in MCU history, as the assassin-turned-Avenger willingly gave up her life to secure the Soul Stone. But that hasn’t stopped hopefuls from theorizing about potential multiverse loopholes or alternate-timeline versions of the character making their way back to the big screen.

Johansson, however, seems determined to preserve the integrity of Natasha’s story arc. After nearly a decade of playing the character across multiple MCU films, she bid her final farewell in 2021’s Black Widow—a long-awaited solo film that explored Natasha’s past and her complicated legacy.
While the Marvel multiverse has opened doors for past characters to reappear (cough Robert Downey Jr. is now Doctor Doom), Johansson appears steadfast in letting Natasha rest in peace. So, unless Kevin Feige has a reality-warping trick up his sleeve, it looks like we’ve truly seen the last of Black Widow.
But hey, in the MCU, never say never… right?
