James Gunn has found his Brainiac. The filmmaker behind the rebooted DC Universe has tapped German actor Lars Eidinger to play the iconic Superman villain in Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming DC Studios epic that brings together the Man of Steel and his most famous foe. The casting marks the first time Brainiac will appear in a live action Superman feature, a long overdue milestone for one of the character’s most formidable antagonists.

Best known for his daring, cerebral performances in European cinema and theater, Eidinger brings an unsettling intelligence that feels tailor made for Brainiac. In the comics, the character is a hyper intelligent android from the planet Colu, obsessed with cataloging knowledge across the universe. His fixation is not academic curiosity but domination, with a chilling habit of shrinking entire cities and preserving them as trophies. It is a villainy that feels both cosmic and deeply personal, especially when Superman’s own past is involved.

Why Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac Is a Game Changer for the New DCU

Brainiac was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino and first appeared in Action Comics #242. Over the decades, the character has evolved into one of Superman’s most dangerous adversaries, often rivaling Lex Luthor in both intellect and menace. Some storylines even credit Brainiac with destroying or bottling Krypton’s greatest cities, turning him into a living archive of Superman’s deepest loss. For longtime fans, his arrival on the big screen feels less like a surprise and more like destiny.

Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. According to early details, the film forces the Man of Steel and Luthor into an uneasy alliance when a new galactic threat emerges. That threat being Brainiac would make perfect narrative sense. Few villains can push Superman intellectually and emotionally while also threatening the fate of entire worlds.

Gunn confirmed the casting on Instagram, writing, “In our worldwide search for Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, Lars Eidinger rose to the top. Welcome to the DCU, Lars.” The post signals Gunn’s continued commitment to bold casting choices that prioritize presence and performance over familiarity.

An April production start is currently being eyed for Man of Tomorrow, with a theatrical release set for July 9, 2027. The film follows the massive success of Superman, Gunn’s first tentpole for the new DC Studios, which is co led by Gunn and Peter Safran and grossed over $616 million worldwide.

With Eidinger stepping into Brainiac’s cold circuitry, Man of Tomorrow is shaping up to be one of DC’s most ambitious and emotionally charged chapters yet.
