‘Apex’ Review: Guilt, Cruel Wilderness, and a Game of Cat-And-Mouse

‘Apex’: Charlize Theron Fights for Her Life in Netflix’s Pulse-Pounding Survival Thriller.

I’ve been a Charlize Theron enthusiast since I was a kid. I remember my parents watching Taylor Hackford’s The Devil’s Advocate and I caught glimpses of Theron as Mary Ann before my parents (rightfully so!) told me to go to my room because I was too young for the film. Once I grew, I, of course, saw it, and many other positions from Theron’s filmography. With Baltasar Kormákur’s Apex, Theron adds yet another position to an already impressive range. With a fast tempo and packed with action sequences, the film is entertaining and gasp-worthy.

After a tragic climbing accident, an adrenaline seeker Sasha (Theron) travels to Australia to honor the memory of her late partner (Eric Bana). Venturing and kayaking through the Australian wilderness—Tommy’s homeland, Sasha’s solo voyage is brutally interrupted by a vicious predator (Taron Egerton), whose goal is to play cat-and-mouse game deep in the wilderness. A wilderness that Sasha doesn’t know, but Ben does. With the dangerous man following her footsteps with a crossbow, Sasha has to outsmart him before she becomes his victim.

Apex: Charlize Theron Delivers in Kormákur’s Gripping Survival Thriller

Let’s discuss casting; one of the strongest components of Apex. I personally believe that if Charlize Theron is in a project, there is always something I can take from a film. It wasn’t different this time around. As Sasha, Theron is not only persevering; she’s strong-willed, and ambitious. Wait until you see Sasha climb or kayak; I, for one, couldn’t look away. Although, said ambition does get her in trouble more often than she cares to admit. As the film unfurls, the audience has a chance to discover that it’s her ambition that contributed to the events opening ApexThus, Kormákur’s film is not only an action-packed flick but a character study, showcasing how guilt affects our ability to process traumatic life events.

Theron is a lead and a heart of the film, but Egerton doesn’t fall far behind. His character slowly but surely turns more evil and dangerous, almost like the filmmakers want to unravel his madness in doses. And what a way to build the character. Just when you think you know everything there is to know to Ben’s character, another brutal twist is revealed. Both Egerton and Theron play off of one another so well, providing intriguing dynamics resembling predator and prey—animalistic sounds included!

Norway’s unforgiving mountains, Australian wilderness; Apex also contains some awe-inspiring cinematography, and I have to give an applause to Lawrence Sher, the director of photography. While we get to know both Sasha and Ben as they play this chase for life and death, we also get to experience some of the most breathtaking landscapes. The overwhelming wilderness and the sheer vastness of it, which gives the impression of an endless forest, add to the atmosphere of dread and fear that filmmakers successfully craft with the script. It also helps us feel similarly to Sasha: lost and confused in a vast, foreign place, seemingly with no way out.

Apex contains a simple story, one-plot line narrative that zeroes in on only two people. But simple doesn’t mean to equal negative; in contrary. Sometimes we don’t need overtly complex special effects or multiple plot lines. Sometimes a simple but human story enthralls us just as well and this is what Apex is.

If you enjoy survival films packed with action, Apex is one for you. Those who like a substantial character study will also appreciate Kormákur’s film. There is one particular twist (in a perfect timing, too!) that will certainly cause some gasps. But if that’s not enough, there is always Charlize kayaking (no stuntwoman there) — believe me, you want to see that!
