‘The Marvels’ Tracking Low $70M-$80M Domestic Opening Weekend

Could the MCU’s next installment and sequel to Captain Marvel be the next victim of ‘superhero fatigue’?

The Marvels Box Issues

The MCU’s next installment and sequel to Captain Marvel may be the next victim of “superhero fatigue”. BoxOfficePro recently reported early tracking for The Marvels, stating it’s on pace for a $70-$80 million domestic opening weekend, ranging from $121-$189 million total. Keep in mind it’s still very early, but with a budget of around $273 million, even Dune: Part 2’s delay may not be enough to help.

Though superhero fatigue and ridiculously high budgets aren’t the only things to blame, let’s take a look at some of the other potential factors going against the Brie Larson-led franchise.

First, of course, is the SAG-AFTRA strike. Thanks to the big studios not wanting to pay their actors fairly, the industry has been in an odd position these past few months. Union actors are not allowed to promote or even mention their projects until a new deal is complete. Considering the digital age we’re in, it does make a difference in the marketing of each movie.

Next, another issue at hand is the current lack of direction in the MCU as a whole. Phase Four was all about new beginnings and fresh faces across the board. Regardless of how you felt about it, most of the projects were necessary building blocks for the future, aka Phase Five and Six. The problem with Phase Five is that there’s no real inclination of where the stories want to go. Each movie/show feels like a one-off more than building its characters for the next big event such as Kang Dynasty. Much of the magic of the previous Infinity Saga was the sense of connectivity with each project.

The juggernaut studio led by Kevin Feige seems to be taking the criticism seriously, with a big shift to its storytelling on the rise.

What Is The Marvels About?

Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau.

Although the run-time is short, there are still some big players in play. Such as breakout star Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and WandaVision standout Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris).

Here are some of the global box-office comparisons from other CBM’s this year: Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania – $476 million
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: $845.6 million
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – $690 million

The Marvels starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani hits theatres on November 10th.
