Director Paul Feig confirmed on the red carpet of the 2026 Academy Awards that production on the highly anticipated sequel will kick off this fall, saying simply, “We start shooting in the fall.” Four words. Four very powerful words that sent the internet into a collective spiral, and we are absolutely here for it.
For those who somehow missed The Housemaid during its absolutely massive Christmas theatrical run, let us catch you up: the sexy, twisted thriller became one of Lionsgate’s biggest hits in recent memory, grossing nearly $395 million at the global box office. It was the kind of number that makes studio executives weep with joy and immediately greenlight a sequel before the credits finish rolling.
The follow-up, The Housemaid’s Secret, is based on the second novel in Freida McFadden’s wildly addictive book series. Sydney Sweeney returns as Millie Calloway, the housemaid with more skeletons in her closet than most people have furniture, and this time, Millie finds herself tangled in a deadly scheme masterminded by her new employer, one Wendy Garrick. Dark? Absolutely. Delicious? Without question.
And returning alongside Sweeney is Michele Morrone, the Italian actor who co-starred with Feig in Another Simple Favor and who, let’s be honest, the internet has been loudly obsessed with since the moment he appeared on screen. The chemistry between him and Sweeney was one of the first film’s most talked-about elements, and Feig clearly knows better than to tamper with something that works. As the director himself said with a knowing smile, “You know, things happen. Why would I mess with success?” Preach, Paul.

As for a release date, all signs point to The Housemaid’s Secret landing in theaters around December 17, 2027, which would place it squarely in the same holiday window that made the original such a phenomenon. Nothing says festive season quite like psychological thriller energy and morally complicated housemaids.
Now, if you’re wondering how on earth Sydney Sweeney is fitting all of this into her schedule, the answer is: with the organizational skills of someone who has clearly managed impossible households before. She is currently in production on Custom of the Country, directed by Josie Rourke and starring Leo Woodall. Reports also suggest she wrapped something called Scandalous! opposite David Jonsson, and she may also be circling both the Netflix adaptation of Gundam and Jon M. Chu’s Split Fiction. Oh, and she just launched her lingerie brand SYRN, because apparently one career is never enough.
Sydney Sweeney is not surviving 2026. She is thriving in it, and The Housemaid’s Secret is shaping up to be her crown jewel (and maybe her first franchise) heading into 2027. Block off that December, because Millie Calloway is coming back, and she has secrets to spill.
