This week, Sydney Sweeney ignited a flurry of casting rumors after being spotted on location for the highly anticipated sequel in New York City, just steps away from Emily Blunt.

Directed once again by David Frankel, the follow-up to the 2006 fashion-industry classic sees Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Blunt slipping back into their iconic roles. Production is well underway, and the internet has been on high alert for sneak peeks. Enter Sweeney, who was caught by fans emerging from a trailer in a low-key ensemble, oversized hoodie, sweatpants, hood up, and umbrella in tow. While the look was decidedly not Miranda Priestly-approved, the sighting was enough to send speculation into overdrive about whether the Euphoria star might be playing a new assistant, a stylish rival, or something entirely unexpected.
The film, set to debut May 1, 2026, has already been generating buzz, but Sweeney’s possible involvement has split fans right down the middle.

The rumors come at a complicated moment for Sweeney, who’s been weathering backlash over her latest American Eagle campaign, cheekily titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” Playing on the word “genes,” the ad drew criticism for promoting narrow beauty standards and using suggestive imagery, some deemed aimed at the male gaze. American Eagle defended the creative direction in an Instagram statement, clarifying, “The message is and always was about the jeans, her jeans, her story. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
