Key Takeaways

The volatile world of cryptocurrency has once again ensnared a high-profile celebrity, with American actress Sydney Sweeney becoming its latest victim. As the digital currency market balloons in popularity, it also becomes a more attractive target for cybercriminals. In a string of recent breaches involving well-known figures, Sweeney’s X account fell prey to hackers, who utilized her platform to promote a dubious cryptocurrency.

The attackers wasted no time, launching a cryptocurrency under Sweeney’s name and swiftly capitalizing on her fame. The ill-gotten coin drew in over $10 million in trading activity within just two hours of its July 2nd launch. However, the excitement was short-lived as the price of SWEENEY plummeted nearly 90% within a little over an hour, starting at 6:15 pm UTC. According to DEX Screener, the market cap of SWEENEY is currently valued at $1.2 million, a stark drop from its peak of $3.85 million.
A now-deleted post from Sweeney’s account read, “Well I think it’s time… $sweeney is now live 100mc incoming.” The compromised account also teased discussions about the token on X Spaces, alongside announcements of token burns and giveaways.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time cryptocurrency hackers have targeted Sweeney. Earlier this year, her Twitter account was similarly hijacked to promote a Solana meme currency with explicit themes.

The tech-savvy followers on Crypto Twitter quickly identified the fraudulent nature of the posts. This incident mirrors recent hacks involving other celebrities like 50 Cent and Hulk Hogan, whose accounts were exploited to push similar Pump—fun-generated Solana meme coins. Even the legendary heavy metal band Metallica recently fell victim to a comparable scam.
These high-profile breaches underscore the growing need for increased cybersecurity measures in cryptocurrency, as the line between fame and exploitation becomes increasingly blurred.
