Ryan Coogler is officially returning to Wakanda. After diving into supernatural action with his hit film Sinners, the filmmaker confirmed that Black Panther 3 is not only happening but is his next project. Coogler shared the update during the Sinners panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, where he told Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. that he is “working on it hard” and gearing up to complete the MCU trilogy he began in 2018. The announcement electrified Marvel fans who have been waiting for clarity on the future of the franchise following the emotional release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Black Panther 3 in the works: Marvel’s Most Anticipated Return Just Became Official

While onstage, Coogler even joked about usually avoiding direct confirmation. “If it was anybody but you, I would say I can neither confirm or deny,” he teased. “But we are working on it hard. Yeah, it is the next movie.” With that, he ushered in the official start of the next chapter of one of Marvel’s most beloved sagas. The first two films became cultural landmarks, driven by rich mythology, powerhouse performances, and the late Chadwick Boseman’s iconic take on T’Challa.
Casting rumors have already ignited the fandom. In November 2024, Denzel Washington revealed during an Australian press tour for Gladiator II that Coogler was “writing a part for me,” a claim the director has since confirmed. Washington’s potential involvement set off a firestorm of excitement, as fans speculated about which character the legendary actor could bring to life in the MCU. His presence alone would elevate Black Panther 3 into event-status territory.
But the biggest question surrounding the film has always been the future of T’Challa. Boseman first appeared as the Wakandan king in Captain America: Civil War, later anchoring Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Marvel chose not to recast the role following his death in 2020, instead shifting the narrative to explore grief, legacy, and Shuri’s rise to the mantle. However, new rumors suggest that the studio may be preparing to recast T’Challa for its upcoming multiversal arcs. Damson Idris (F1, Snowfall) has been floated as a possible recast for Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, and some insiders believe he could be positioned as the central protagonist of Black Panther 3.

Marvel has not confirmed any of these rumors, but Coogler’s return signals a major turning point. Whether the story continues with Shuri as Black Panther, introduces a new T’Challa from another universe, or blends both directions, fans can expect a deeply emotional and visually bold finale from the filmmaker who shaped Wakanda’s global impact.
With Coogler back at the helm and Hollywood heavyweights circling the project, Black Panther 3 is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Marvel films of the decade. Wakanda is ready to roar again.
