More than a decade after her star-making turn in The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot Robbie reveals a surprising detail about one of her most memorable scenes. In a candid discussion on the Talking Pictures podcast, the three-time Oscar nominee disclosed that her full-frontal scene was her own idea, despite director Martin Scorsese offering her the option to wear a robe for comfort.
“That’s not what she would do in that scene,” Robbie explained, discussing her character Naomi Lapaglia’s seduction of Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. “The whole point is that she’s going to come out completely naked—that’s the card she’s playing.”

It’s a testament to Robbie’s fearless acting choices that she opted for such a bold move right at the start of her Hollywood journey. Robbie’s decision echoes a long tradition of actresses using impactful full-frontal scenes to launch or elevate their careers, much like Demi Moore and Sharon Stone did in the ’90s, or how Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney have more recently leveraged similar scenes to great effect. Robbie, savvy and business-minded even at 21 when she filmed The Wolf of Wall Street, knew exactly how to make an impression.
Robbie’s audition process was just as audacious. Instead of the expected kiss in her final audition scene with DiCaprio, she chose a slap. “I thought, I could kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now, and that would be awesome. I can’t wait to tell all of my friends this. And then I thought… nah. And just walloped him in the face,” she shared. The moment left a lasting impression, breaking the silence with laughter from both DiCaprio and Scorsese, who found it hilariously fitting.
Reflecting on her decision, Robbie humorously imagined the potential fallout: “Not only will you never work again, actually you will go to jail for this, you idiot. And also why did you have to hit him so hard? You should have done it lighter.”

Her involvement didn’t stop at physical choices; Robbie also had creative input regarding the script. She suggested the scene where Naomi and Jordan have sex one last time before discussing divorce, highlighting the collaborative spirit on set. “We were a couple of months into the shoot at that point,” she recalled in 2022. “The tone had been set that it was a bit of a free for all. It was like the crazier you are, the more Marty will like it. And the more screen time you’re going to get.”
Robbie’s relationship with Scorsese allowed for such contributions. “We spoke all the time,” she said. “I’d sit at video village, and he would tell stories about the Mafia and old film stars, but he didn’t actually give direction.”

Margot Robbie’s candid revelations shed light on the artistic choices that helped define her as one of Hollywood’s most daring and dynamic actresses. Her willingness to push boundaries and her strategic understanding of her role has clearly paid off, cementing her place in the entertainment industry.
