The official trailer for The Wrong Girls has finally arrived, and it is exactly as ridiculous as Kristen Stewart promised. NEON dropped the first full look at the stoner comedy that marks the feature directorial debut of writer-director Dylan Meyer, who also happens to be Stewart’s wife.
Kristen and Alia Shawkat star as Frankie and Molly, two pot-loving best friends whose lives are derailed by a case of mistaken identity. Stewart has never been shy about what she signed up for. “It’s a stoner girl comedy, and it’s really f—ing stupid. I think you’ll like it,” she said in a previous interview. Consider that the perfect elevator pitch.

Here’s the setup: Frankie and Molly are longtime codependent slackers coasting through life in a haze of weed smoke. Then, just as Molly’s sweet boyfriend Josh (Zack Fox) asks her to move in, Frankie is accidentally handed a briefcase stuffed with glowing vials of an experimental psychedelic. Cue the chaos. The two bumble into supernatural side effects (telepathy, anyone?) while dodging the Danish bad guys who want their drugs back.
The ensemble is stacked and delightfully bizarre. LaKeith Stanfield plays the for-hire action man who hands over the fateful briefcase, Tony Hale is a douchey real estate developer, and Saturday Night Live alum Kate McKinnon and Geena Davis appear as the scientists behind the experimental drug. Best of all? Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani voice Frankie and Molly’s judgmental talking cats.
Meyer, who previously wrote Moxie, called the project deeply personal. “It’s a love letter to wayward chaotic women and the essential platonic partnerships that prop them up,” she told Entertainment Weekly, adding that despite the squids and hitmen, “the emotional story and stakes are pure memoir.”
The film reunites Stewart with NEON after Spencer and Crimes of the Future. The Wrong Girls hits theaters August 14.
