Kim Novak has broken her silence on the upcoming biopic Scandalous! and expressed concerns about how her love story will be portrayed on the big screen. The 92-year-old actress, best known for her unforgettable turn in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, spoke with The Guardian and shared her hesitation about the film’s focus and provocative title.
“I don’t think the relationship was scandalous,” Novak said, reflecting on her real-life romance with Sammy Davis Jr. “He’s somebody I really cared about. We had so much in common, including the need to be accepted for who we are and what we do, rather than how we look.”
Sydney Sweeney takes on Kim Novak in Colman Domingo’s Scandalous!

Still, Novak admitted she worries the filmmakers may exaggerate certain aspects of the story. “But I’m concerned they’re going to make it all sexual reasons,” she added. The film is set to star Sydney Sweeney as Novak, with David Jonsson taking on the role of legendary entertainer Davis Jr. Their relationship in 1957 faced intense outside pressures. Columbia Pictures boss Harry Cohn reportedly threatened Davis with mob violence, fearing the interracial romance would harm Novak’s career and the studio’s business.
The project is already drawing buzz thanks to its cast and creative team. Sweeney’s Euphoria co-star Colman Domingo is directing the film (who was just Sabrina Capenter’s new video), which has not yet begun production. The actress appears committed to honoring Novak’s legacy both on and off screen. At the 2025 Met Gala, Sweeney turned heads in a glittering black Miu Miu gown adorned with a gold brooch, which she described to Vogue as an homage to Novak’s look in the 1967 film The Legend of Lylah Clare.

Despite her rising career, Sweeney has faced her share of controversy this year. She was criticized for a tongue-in-cheek business venture selling bath water and later drew backlash over an American Eagle denim campaign that some accused of promoting eugenics through wordplay on “genes” and “jeans.” The actress has brushed off the criticism and continues to press forward with high-profile roles.
Sweeney, a two-time Emmy nominee, will also debut her performance in Christy at TIFF this month, where she portrays boxer Christy Martin. Early reviews suggest it may be the most powerful performance of her career. Whether Scandalous! will prove just as impactful remains to be seen, but Novak’s words add an extra layer of intrigue to a story that was already destined to spark conversation.
