The MCU is buzzing once again. Rumors are swirling about Elizabeth Olsen reprising her role as the Scarlet Witch, while James Spader’s Ultron might be back to wreak havoc in a major way. The news broke on Friday that Spader, who brought the menacing AI to life in Avengers: Age of Ultron, is set to return for the upcoming Disney+ series, Vision. This series is being described as the third part of a trilogy that began with WandaVision and continues with Agatha All Along.

Although Ultron was seemingly destroyed by Vision (played by Paul Bettany) in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it appears that the villain’s story is far from over. Reports suggest that Spader’s character won’t just make a brief appearance. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the all-powerful AI will have “a major role in the show,” hinting at a significant narrative involving the once-feared foe. Richtman also teased that the Vision series will “have elements of West Coast Avengers,” a nod to the comic book team founded by Hawkeye in the ’80s. The original lineup of the West Coast Avengers included Vision, Mockingbird, Wonder Man, Tigra, and Iron Man (with Rhodey donning the armor). While it’s uncertain if this team will form in the upcoming series, the groundwork might be set for their debut.

Meanwhile, rumors of Elizabeth Olsen’s return as the Scarlet Witch are gaining momentum. Following a report by Deadline hinting at her involvement in Vision, Richtman claimed that Olsen is “locked in” to reprise her role for “a Marvel project that is filming in 2025.” While it’s not confirmed that this project is Vision, it aligns with the timeline, considering Avengers: Doomsday is also scheduled to start shooting next year.

Vision is undergoing some creative changes, with Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas now taking the helm as showrunner. The series is aiming for a 2026 premiere, and Matalas’ work on Picard has reportedly impressed Marvel Studios’ top brass, including Kevin Feige, who is known to be a Star Trek fan. Feige even appeared with Matalas on a recent episode of the Star Trek podcast, Inglorious Treksperts.

Paul Bettany is set to reprise his role as Vision, focusing on “Ghost Vision” aka “White Vision” exploring his new purpose. The WandaVision finale revealed that the Vision we followed throughout the series was a construct of Wanda’s, while the real “White Vision” was reconstructed by S.W.O.R.D. and programmed to track down and eliminate the Scarlet Witch. This version declared himself the “true Vision” before disappearing into parts unknown.

As for Wanda, her last appearance saw her decimating the Illuminati and bringing down a mountain upon herself in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Previous rumors about the Vision Quest storyline hinted at the introduction of Vision’s children, Vin and Viv, to the MCU. While it’s unclear which elements from Jac Schaefer’s original vision for the series will make it to the final cut, Euphoria star Javon Walton is rumored to be in consideration for the role of “Teen,” likely referring to Speed.

WandaVision enchanted audiences by blending classic sitcom styles with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, unraveling the mystery of Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s seemingly perfect suburban life. With the series’ success and the anticipation for Agatha All Along, it’s clear that Marvel Studios is just getting started with its exploration of these beloved characters. Alongside Olsen and Bettany, WandaVision featured standout performances from Kathryn Hahn, Teyonah Parris, Debra Jo Rupp, Randall Park, and Kat Dennings. The Marvel Universe is expanding in thrilling ways, and fans can’t wait to see what’s next.
