KITT is about to hit the road again, this time on the big screen. The creators of Netflix’s smash hit Cobra Kai are officially in talks to bring the 1980s action series Knight Rider back to life as a feature film for Universal Pictures.
Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, the trio behind Cobra Kai, are circling both the writing and directing duties on the project, while also producing under their Counterbalance Entertainment banner. They are joining forces with producers Kelly McCormick and David Leitch of 87North, the powerhouse duo behind The Fall Guy. Gary Barber and Chris Stone will also produce through Spyglass, solidifying a dream team of action specialists set to reimagine the cult classic.
Reviving KITT: How the Cobra Kai Creators Plan to Reimagine Knight Rider

The original Knight Rider, created by Glen A. Larson, aired on NBC from 1982 to 1986 and became a defining piece of ‘80s pop culture. Starring David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, the series followed a crime fighter armed with a futuristic, artificially intelligent Pontiac Trans Am named KITT. With its high-concept premise, glossy car stunts, and unforgettable synth theme, the show blended camp and cool into a weekly thrill ride.
This isn’t the first attempt to bring Knight Rider to theaters. Previous efforts included a script by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, but none made it across the finish line. With the Cobra Kai team at the wheel, however, hopes are high. The trio has already proven their knack for balancing nostalgia with fresh storytelling, turning The Karate Kid legacy into a global phenomenon while introducing a new generation of fans.

Details on the new film are being kept tightly under wraps, but expectations are that Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald will give the story their signature mix of heartfelt character beats and high-octane action. If their track record with Cobra Kai is any indication, fans can expect a reinvention that pays homage to the original while making the property feel relevant for today.
The creative team’s slate also includes another ’80s-inspired project: a planned spinoff of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for Paramount, focusing on the two valets who famously joyride in Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari. With Knight Rider now in their sights, the trio continues to prove that they know how to take beloved pop culture artifacts and steer them into new territory.
Whether it’s martial arts rivalries, joyriding Ferraris, or a talking car fighting crime, the Counterbalance Entertainment team is building a resume that blends throwback fun with modern energy. And for fans of Knight Rider, it means one thing: buckle up, because KITT is back in action.
